Your Comprehensive Guide To: Wearing Things On Your Head

It’s wintertime in the city, and that means the arrival of one thing that every self-respecting individual detests most. Nope – it’s not the slushy streets or blustering winds, but the oh-so-dreaded hat hair.

Okay, okay. Is hat hair really that bad? The static look can definitely come in handy in certain situations – at a science convention, perhaps, or when you’re taking the subway alone and want to avoid any and all potential conversations with strangers. But for the most part, winter hair is a bother – and that’s exactly why I’ve compiled this handy list of headwear & hairstyle combinations to keep you looking cute and unruffled through the next fews months of winter hell bliss. You may even be tempted to wear things on your head all year round!

Floppy Felt Hat

This hat is so classy it hurts. It’s even better if you can find one made of real wool, because acrylic is the worst material when it comes to static electricity. You can wear this hat with loose waves for a boho vibe, or try a unique braided ‘do to keep your hair from getting trapped in the scarf you will ultimately need (because, although fashionable, these hats do not provide the most coziness).

Beanie

I personally love it when I see beanies paired with stick-straight hair. There’s just something so effortlessly minimal about it. Whatever you do, don’t put on a beanie if your hair is up – you’ll look bald, and also like you have weird bumps growing out of your head.

Headwrap

Now, this is something you wear when your hair is in a high ponytail or ballet-bun. They hide second (or third, or fourth) day greasiness, while making you look all-around chic. Knit and crocheted options are great for colder weather, while a simple scarf can work wonders in the early spring – If we ever make it there…

Earmuffs

These are literally the best winter creations, like, ever. You can do anything you want with your hair, and earmuffs will slide right over it and keep your ears toasty and your hair static-free! Try experimenting with some half up creations where your ears are exposed to take full advantage of these mufflers.

True Canadian Trapper Hat

I was so tempted to tell you guys how to style your hair with one of those funny raccoon hats, but I figured a modern approach would be more beneficial. It’s very important when you’re wearing one of these hats to keep your hair at least partially down, because if you don’t you will either look like you have no hair, or like you are a very feminine boy. To add some girliness I would recommend loose waves with some cute little curly tendrils that frame your face, but I have to say – if you’re wearing one of these, I would focus less on the beauty and more on the warmth… It must be absolutely freezing out.
